The UCSF Benioff Center for Microbiome Medicine is seeking professionals to help conduct cutting-edge mass-spectrometry based metabolomics research.  You will work in a world-class team to discover small molecules and metabolic pathways important for human health.  You will have the opportunity to lead high quality data acquisition and analysis in a state-of-the-art metabolomics research laboratory.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Prepare metabolite samples, standard solutions, and mobile phase buffers for HPLC, LCMS, GCMS analysis.

Perform organic extractions of metabolites from biological samples (human, murine)

Assist with operation and maintenance of HPLC, GCMS and LCMS instruments.

Assist with LCMS and GCMS method development for small molecule and lipid detection.

Implement changes in methods and train lab personnel on new methodologies.

Maintain a comprehensive laboratory notebook of experiments done on a daily basis.

      Prepare and update SOPs.

Order supplies and maintain detailed account of expenditures in line with lab budget.

Maintain and curate in-house metabolite database and spectral library.

Analyze targeted and untargeted metabolomics datasets.

Report data for scientific use with the potential to contribute to scientific publications.

Interact with vendors to investigate novel supplies and technology.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in chemistry, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, organic chemistry, or related field.

Experience working in a research lab setting (1-2 years).

Experience with liquid and solid phase extractions of small molecules and lipids.

Experience operating HPLC, GCMS and LCMS instruments.

Experience analyzing mass spectrometry data - including high resolution, accurate mass and tandem mass spectrometry data.

Preferred:

Familiarity with basic metabolomics pipeline including sample preparation, LC-MS operation, and data analysis.

Experience with small-molecule extractions from biological samples (e.g. human, murine, plant tissues).

Experience with derivatization reactions for GC-MS (e.g. methylation, silylation reactions)

Experience using R, Python, or other programing languages to analyze data.

Experience using various metabolite libraries (e.g. METLIN, mzCloud), Sirius or other AI software to identify unknown metabolites.

Experience publishing or presenting experimental results.
