Kyle Edwards and Grieg Steward are seeking graduate students to join their research groups at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, Department of Oceanography. New students will be supported by one of two collaborative projects funded by the National Science Foundation.

The first project focuses on microbial food webs: identifying the unicellular predators that consume the most abundant bacteria in the ocean, and characterizing the distinct ecosystem roles of mixotrophic (predatory phytoplankton) and heterotrophic flagellates. One position supported by this project will employ laboratory and field experiments using an array of cultures. Another position will develop statistical and mathematical models of protists with diverse trophic strategies.

The second project focuses on viruses that infect diverse coastal and open ocean phytoplankton. The position supported by this project will utilize a suite of virus cultures to characterize the ecological consequences of virus size diversity.
