Biological Scientist II in Microbial Ecology Lab at University of Florida/Fort Lauderdale

The successful applicant will conduct and oversee research in microbial ecology and plant pathology in the laboratory and in the field. Under limited supervision, the application will conduct and improve methods to identify and characterize microbial community structure and function. Daily work tasks include cultivation, isolation, and biochemical characterization of pure cultures, as well as application of cultivation-independent methods for the analysis of natural or artificial microbial communities. Applicant must have strong background in cultivation and biochemical characterization of microorganisms, as well as bioinformatics approaches to analyze high-throughput sequencing data. Applicant should demonstrate an established track record in either microbial ecology, plant pathology, and/or biochemistry and have a strong desire to further expand their knowledge and learn new research areas and implement new technologies and assays for experimental studies in the lab and in the field. Extensive knowledge and previous experience with microbial cultures of diverse microorganisms and host/microbe associations will be critical. The ideal candidate will be a team player and enjoys mentoring and training undergraduate- and graduate students, as well as student interns. Experience in managing daily administrative and laboratory routines (including accounting, environmental health and safety compliance, and laboratory maintenance) are highly desired. Applicant will spend 10% of time with administrative tasks like lab orders and maintaining wet benches, following and enforcing chemical and bio-safety requirements, and managing waste disposal.
The UF/IFAS Department for Microbiology & Cell Science seeks to recruit and retain a diverse workforce as a reflection of our commitment to serve the diverse people of Florida, to maintain the excellence of the University, and to offer our students richly varied disciplines, perspectives, and ways of knowing and learning.
