Postdoc position in the Microbial Systems Group at the DOE Joint Genome Institute

Postdoctoral position in microbial community genomics of water treatment at DOE Joint Genome Institute

The Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute (DOE-JGI, a division of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory), has an exciting opportunity available for a postdoctoral fellow on a multi-divisional collaborative project supported by a labwide research initiative targeting the “Water-Energy Nexus”.

This individual will work as part of the Microbial Systems Group investigating metabolic pathways and microbe-microbe interactions in contaminant-degrading microbial communities using biochemical and sequence-based methods.

Responsibilities include:

-Collecting field samples of produced water from hydrocarbon extraction operations

-Designing and maintaining microcosms to develop microbial communities proficient in contaminant degradation

-Performing chemical analyses and extracting nucleic acids for sequencing

-Analyzing and interpreting metagenome and metatranscriptome sequence data and metadata

-Identifying key genes, organisms and pathways involved in contaminant removal

Desired qualifications:

-Ph.D. in life sciences or a related field

-Strong background in molecular biology and genomics

-Experience with bacterial growth assays, protocol optimization, and nucleic acid isolation

-Experience with statistics, databases of genomics information, and/or methods of biological sequence data analysis

-Effective oral and written communication skills to work with a variety of technical and scientific personnel as well as present findings at group meetings and conferences

This is a two-year term appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent upon continued funding and satisfactory performance.
