PhD Student in Environmental Biotechnology and Environmental Microbiology
The group of Dr. Ryan Ziels (https://www.civil.ubc.ca/faculty/ryan-ziels) in the department of Civil Engineering at the University of British Columbia is seeking a motivated Masters or PhD student to join our research team in Fall 2019. The student will conduct research in one or more of the following areas: 1) microbial ecology of anaerobic biotechnologies for recovering biofuels from waste, 2) biological processes for sustainable removal of nitrogen from wastewater, or 3) developing aerobic granular sludge for treatment of low-strength wastewater. The research will involve linking the abundance and expression of metabolic pathways with observed treatment performance. Tools such as metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, and metaproteomics will be employed to establish such linkages.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Environmental Engineering and molecular microbiology. Exceptional students from backgrounds other than engineering –including microbiology, chemistry, environmental science—are also welcome to apply.
The applicant should have an M.S. (for PhD applicants) or a B.S. (for Masters applicants), as well as excellent verbal and writing communication skills. Ideally, the candidate will also have experience in molecular microbiology, including PCR, sequencing metagenomics, and bioinformatics. The ability to process large datasets in a coding language (R, python, perl, etc.) is also a plus.
Applicants should contact Dr. Ryan Ziels directly by email at rziels[at]civil.ubc.ca (replace [at] with @), with the subject title “ISME UBC Graduate Position”. Please include a CV and a personal statement that addresses your academic background experience, current research interests, and long-term academic goals. A competitive stipend will be provided to the successful candidate.
