PhD Positions – Environmental Microbiology and Biotechnology

biodegradation and bioremediation of emerging contaminants (e.g., PFAS, 1,4-dioxane, microplastics), antimicrobial resistance and inactivation, and microbial ecology in engineered systems (e.g., biofiltration and bioreactors)

The Department of Chemistry and Environmental Science at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) is searching for qualified applicants who intend to pursue a Ph.D. degree in the areas of environmental microbiology and biotechnology. Students with strong motivation to conduct research on topics, including biodegradation and bioremediation of emerging contaminants (e.g., PFAS, 1,4-dioxane, microplastics), antimicrobial resistance and inactivation, engineered systems (e.g., biofiltration and bioreactors) are highly encouraged to apply. Ideal applicants are expected to possess solid academic background and hands-on laboratory experience with microbial cultivation and characterization, biomolecular techniques (e.g., PCR and cloning), omics and single cell analysis, and advanced analytical tools (e.g., GC/MS and LC/MS/MS). Applicants with BS or MS degrees in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, and other relevant disciplines will be preferred. Excellent English communication and written skills are also desirable.

The student will be admitted to the NJIT Environmental Science Ph.D. program starting in the summer or fall semester of 2024 and will receive tuition support, and a competitive monthly stipend and benefits.
